Former Patton leader has resigned
after one year at Eastern Guilford

LINCOLNTON – There’s no direct confirmation from Lincolnton High’s athletic department but two newspaper reports on Tuesday say Joe Glass is leaving Eastern Guilford to become the Wolves’ next head football coach.
The Burlington Times News has reported the resignation of Glass at Eastern Guilford and its story said Glass – formerly also a head coach at Patton for two seasons (2013, 2014) – is the new hire at Lincolnton, pending approval of the Lincoln County Board of Education (https://www.thetimesnews.com/sports/20190129/eastern-guilford-football-coach-resigns).
He will replace Ledford Gibson, whose Wolves teams went 36-21 over four seasons – 12-3 in 2-15 after he replaced retiring Scott Cloninger, 13-2 in 2016, 6-7 in 20-17 and 2-9 last season.
The Gaston Gazette is reporting Lincolnton athletic director Cole Sigmon would not confirm Glass’ hiring and that Sigmon indicated no confirmation of hires at the school would come prior to the Lincoln County Board of Education’s next meeting on Feb. 12.
Eastern Guilford was 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-Piedmont 3A last season with Glass as head coach. He came there from Concord Robinson and was 30-22 in four seasons.
Glass, a 1995 graduate of Freedom, has also been an assistant coach during his career at Alexander Central, Hickory and Patton. He was offensive line coach at Patton in 2000-10 under head coaches J.D. Atkins and Chris Deal and his first season as head coach there was in 2012 after replacing Clay Lewis.
Patton was 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A in 2012, finishing sixth, and went 7-5 overall and 3-4 the next year in the Northwestern 3A-4A to finish tied for fifth and reach the state 3A playoffs.
Glass’ unofficial career coaching record over seven seasons is 49-39.
Once Lincolnton fills its open job, there will be one head-coaching opening left in the Greater Hickory region, as Fred T. Foard on Tuesday announced former head coach Ryan Gettys will return as its head coach.
Since last season ended, Lake Norman Charter announced Bob McKay will replace Mark Steele as head coach and return for a second tenure.
West Caldwell’s DeVore Holman won’t return for a third season, and the Warriors will have a new head coach in their first season in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) approved West Caldwell’s request to move out of the Northwestern 3A-4A next school year based on declining enrollment since the last statewide realignment two years ago.
