SHELBY EASTER PAIRINGS: South Caldwell plays Golden Lions on Monday night - Hobbs Daily Report

SHELBY – Pairings for the Shelby Easter high school baseball tournament have been released, and the field again includes South Caldwell.

The tournament begins on Monday at Shelby High, and it’s a four-day, round robin format using two brackets.

The championship game between the bracket winners is scheduled Thursday at 7 p.m.

South Caldwell opens play Monday at 7 p.m. against host Shelby in the No. 1 bracket, and Coach Jeff Parham’s Spartans play Crest on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The other game in the No. 1 bracket, on Tuesday, is Crest against Shelby at 7 p.m.

In the No. 2 bracket, it’s Kings Mountain against Ashbrook on Monday at 4 p.m., Burns against Kings Mountain on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and Burns facing Ashbrook on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The bracket winners will be determined by best record within each bracket.

If two teams are tied, it will be broken by head-to-head winner. If three teams are tied, the tiebreaker will be runs scored and subtract runs allowed and the team with the highest number will be the higher seed. The next two teams break that tie by head-to-head competition.

Five of last year’s eight-team tournament field return – Burns, Kings Mountain, Crest, Shelby and South Caldwell.

The Spartans, 12-3-1 and in second place in the Northwestern 3A-4A (two games back of Fred T. Foard with two to go), reached the Shelby title game last season and fell 2-1 to Crest.

Kings Mountain finished third last year, beating Forestview 12-3, and Burns took seventh last season by beating Shelby 5-1.
