WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 in league as it heads to Tusculum on Wednesday

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Fresh off a weekend road victory over Newberry, S.C., the Lenoir-Rhyne University women have a makeup soccer match on Wednesday at Tusculum.

The visiting Bears (4-2-1, 2-1 South Atlantic Conference) defeated Newberry 5-1 behind three goals by senior Abbie Brown on Saturday. She has six goals this season, ranking third in the SAC.

LRU had five straight goals in the win over Newberry (3-4, 0-3), starting with Brown’s first off a cross from Judith Verdaguer in the 17th minute.

Brown scored twice in a 10-minute span, finishing with seven shots overall and four on goal.

LRU’s lead grew to 5-0 in the 69th minute when Hannah Van Eerden scored on a penalty kick – her first points of the season – and Newberry got its only goal in the 86th minute.

Senior Loren Sterling made three saves in goal for the Bears.

LRU has now scored nine goals and taken 51 shots in the last two matches.

The Bears are 4-0-1 on the road this season.

Wednesday’s match at Tusculum was scheduled to be played last weekend but was postponed by the impact of Hurricanes Frances. It starts on Saturday at 7 p.m.
