WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Bears in third place, have key home match Wednesday against Catawba

HICKORY – A key conference home match is next for the Lenoir-Rhyne University women in soccer as they try to snap a three-match losing streak.

The Bears (7-5-1, 5-3-0) are in third place behind Carson-Newman (6-1) and Anderson, S.C. (5-1-1) in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) and just ahead of Catawba (4-2) and Lincoln Memorial (4-2).

Catawba visits LRU on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for a league match, and the Bears play a home match Friday at 7 p.m. against Shaw.

LRU will honor its seniors at Friday’s match in Moretz Gym.

Coker and Lincoln Memorial defeated LRU to stretch the Bears’ losing streak to three.

Lincoln Memorial 2, LRU 1 (Saturday)

Senior Claire Niebergall had the Bears’ only goal in the 32nd minute of the first half.

LRU outshot the Railsplitters 14-12, including 9-7 on goal.

Loren Sterling made five saves for the Bears and Lincoln Memorial’s Anne-Marie O’Connell had five saves.

The Bears are 1-4 at home this season.

Limestone 2, LRU 1 (Wednesday)

Limestone beat the visiting Bears in a non-league match, improving to 10-1.

Abbie Brown scored first for LRU but Limestone rallied and handed the Bears their first road loss of the season.

Limestone outshot LRU 19-8, including 11-3 in shots on goal.

Sterling had nine saves for the Bears, tying her season and career highs.

Brown’s goal was her 10th of the year and 17th of her career.
