HICKORY – Fourth-ranked Florida Southern rolled past host Lenoir-Rhyne University 17-5 on Saturday in women’s lacrosse despite three goals by the Bears’ Rachel Elmore.
Florida Southern improved to 16-1 and dropped LRU to 7-8.
Junior attacker Aubriana Benedetto – a former LRU-Rhyne player – led Florida Southern with five goals and an assist as the Mocs jumped to a 13-2 halftime lead.
LRU, which had a three-match win streak snapped, got a hat trick from Elmore, a junior midfielder.
Eight players scored for the Mocs, who held a 30-8 advantage in shots taken.
Florida Southern’s Alanna Zambetti played the first half in goal and earned a win.
LRU senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck made seven saves.
Florida Southern is won the NCAA Division II title in 2016 and was second in the nation last season.
The Bears’ next match is Wednesday at home against Coker at 4 p.m. If LRU wins, it clinches a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular-season title.
