WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Lenoir-Rhyne clinches share, moves closer to title

SALISBURY – Four-goal matches from two players lifted visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University past Catawba 14-9 on Wednesday, wrapping up at least a share of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title in women’s lacrosse.

The Bears are 7-7 overall and 7-0 in the league, sitting 1 ½ matches ahead of Catawba (9-6, 5-1) and Queens and each team plays eight conference matches.

The share of – or outright title – will be the first in school history for LRU’s women’s lacrosse program.

Sophomore attacker Cathleen Gaffney and junior midfielder Rachel Elmore each scored four goals to lead LRU past Catawba.

Elmore scored with 31 seconds left in the opening half, breaking a 5-all tie and she also provided the goal that won the match.

LRU had advantages in shots taken (40-23) and ground balls (30-23) as it won its third straight match.

Catawba was led by Erin Green and Nicole Hunt, each with two goals and an assist.

LRU senior All-American goalkeeper Ines Flueck earned a win after making 12 saves while Madison Anselmo made 16 stops for the Indians.

The Bears also got three goals by Gabby Sousa, adding to her team-best 47 goals and 56 points this season.

LRU is at home Sunday at noon to play fourth-ranked Florida Southern.
