HICKORY – Cathleen Gaffney had five goals and four assists on Sunday as Lenoir-Rhyne University cruised past Tusculum 20-9 in women’s lacrosse at Moretz Stadium.
Gaffney is a sophomore from Allentown, Pa., and her big match – plus four scores by sophomore midfielder Kaley Harris – kept the Bears (3-6, 3-0) unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) matches this season.
Tusculum dropped to 2-7, 0-1.
LRU scored eight straight goals to break the match open.
Tusculum’s Emily Gleason and Juliette Cusano each scored three times but the Pioneers’ losing streak was extended to five.
Up 9-7 with six minutes, 54 seconds left in the first half, the Bears reeled off eight consecutive scores to turn the contest into a rout.
Junior midfielder Ashley MacIntyre added three goals for LRU, which held a 30-21 advantage in shots taken.
Senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck stopped five shots and earned a win for the Bears.
Tusculum’s Brooke Wagner made five saves but took the loss.
The 20-goal output was the most the Bears have scored since beating Newberry (S.C.) 20-2 in April of 2016.
LRU’s next match is Wednesday at 4 p.m., a home battle with No. 15 Queens in an SAC match.
