HICKORY – Gabby Sousa’s eight goals led Lenoir-Rhyne University past visiting Coker 14-5 on Wednesday, a win that wrapped up a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) women’s lacrosse regular-season title for the Bears.

Sousa, a junior from Delran, N.J., finished a goal shy of sharing the school record for goals in a match, helping LRU (8-8, 8-0) close out the first league title in women’s lacrosse in school history.

The Bears are the top seed for the SAC tournament and will next play on April 27 in a semifinal. Pairings for the tournament have not yet been set.

LRU led Coker 7-3 at halftime.

Junior midfielder Rachel Elmore had three scores for LRU, which had an edge in shots taken (41-23) and ground balls (24-15).

Senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck made nine saves for the Bears, who limited the Cobras’ Faith Kent – the league’s leading scorer – to just one assist. Haley McCusker led Coker with three goals while Cassie Williams suffered a loss in goal despite 16 stops.

LRU sophomore attacker Cathleen Gaffney had two assists, establishing a new school single-season record for assists (30).

Sousa is one goal away from tying LRU’s school record for goals in a season. She has 56 while

Elmore ranks second in scoring this season with 44 goals.
