WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Suddreth clears 1,000 career points as Bears gain first win

PEMBROKE – Senior Madi Suddreth cleared 1,000 career points on Thursday night, leading Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women to their first victory of the season, 63-58 on the road over UNC Pembroke.

The Bears (1-2) went on a 17-5 scoring run to close the first half.

Suddreth, who played prep basketball at Alexander Central, scored 10 points and passed the 1K mark with her first bucket of the game.

LRU limited UNC Pembroke to 31.6 percent shooting that included 25.8 percent in the opening half.

The Bears made five of 12 free throws over the final two minutes to win as UNC Pembroke fell to 1-2.

UNC Pembroke fell despite winning the boards (43-36) and had 17 turnovers that the Bears turned into 16 points.

Kendall Toineeta led all scorers with 18 points for LRU and Ashley Rodriguez added 12. Suddreth had eight rebounds for the Bears and has scored in double figures in six straight games dating back to last season. She is the 21st women’s player in LRU history to score 1,000 points.

LRU plays its fourth straight road game next, facing Chowan on Saturday at 2 p.m.
