HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University has signed three women’s basketball players, including an all-state player from Statesville Christian High.

In an LRU press release, Bears head coach Cam Sealey announced she will have Blair Barefoot of Wilmington Hoggard High, Michaela Dixon of Butler High in Charlotte and Mallory Sherrill of Statesville Christian on next year’s team.

The trio signed Thursday as part of an early signing period for the 2019-20 class. The Bears signed six players a year ago.

“I am extremely excited about the addition of these outstanding student-athletes to our program next season,” Sealy said in the press release. “They all bring a unique skill set that will continue to uphold the high standard of excellence that our athletic department represents.

“I have had the pleasure to get to know each student-athlete, their families, and coaches, and it is a tribute to all of those individuals, that we are adding three exceptional people, who will be very successful student-athletes at Lenoir Rhyne University.”

Sherrill, a 5-11 forward, was her conference’s Player of the Year in 2017-18, all-state and first-team All-Iredell County.

“I knew Mallory was a steal the moment I found out she had just started playing basketball a few years ago,” Sealy said. “She has such a natural touch around the rim, a knack to read the ball coming off the rim and pursue rebounds, and her athletic ability marks Mallory as a very attractive recruit at this level.”

Barefoot is a 5-foot-7 combo guard who is a second-team all-conference player at team captain at Hoggard, where she is also an all-league player in soccer.

“She knows how to win, and is a true competitor,” Sealy said. “Blair’s basketball IQ is what caught my attention early, I was attracted to her athletic ability, and then I heard from her coaches about her work ethic and it was a no-brainer for me from that moment.”

Dixon is a 5-9 guard-forward who has won three coaches awards while playing at Butler.

“Michaela is a hard-nosed, tough player,” Sealy said. “She is strong and will find a way to get inside position on rebounds; her strength is going to help her hold an advantage on the perimeter in our league.”
