WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Big win over Wingate gives LRU chance to reach .500 in league play

Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women have a chance to even their conference record on Saturday when they face Tusculum on the road with a 2 p.m. tipoff.

The Bears (12-11, 7-8 South Atlantic Conference) pulled above .500 on Wednesday night at home, beating Wingate 66-62.

LRU shares sixth place in the SAC with Catawba and Newberry, with Anderson (S.C.) on top at 16-0 and Wingate (17-6, 12-4) four games back in second place.

The Bears shocked Wingate behind freshman Madeline Hardy, who scored a career-high 23 points by hitting all 10 of her field goal attempts. Karlie Bearden added 10 points, two rebounds and two assists for LRU.

Bearden also had three steals and blocked a shot in the final 10 seconds of the win.

The game featured 12 lead changes and three ties.

LRU shot 47.1 percent and Wingate shot 43.1

Jordan Quick led the Bulldogs with 13 points, Jo Snow added 12 and Caroline Averette had 11.

The Bears improved to 5-6 at home this season.
