COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Bears’ win streak reaches 16 before Catawba wins handily

SALISBURY – Lenoir-Rhyne University got its softball win streak to 16 in a row on Thursday before Catawba snapped the streak by winning the second game of a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) doubleheader.

The Bears, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, won the first game 2-1 and Catawba prevailed 8-1 in the nightcap.

LRU is 26-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC heading into a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday against conference foe Lincoln Memorial. The Bears are in second place.

Catawba is 14-15 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Freshman first baseman Kylee Leonhardt produced the lone offense for the Bears with a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Junior Brandi Parksimproved to 12-3 after picking up a complete game victory.  She allowed just one unearned run while striking out five and pushed her winning streak to seven games.

Catawba’s Preston Ellenberg fell to 4-2 after taking a loss.

Catawba 8, LRU 1

Catawba took control early with a four-run first inning – aided by three LRU errors – on its way to a split.

The Indians did not register a hit in the inning and finished with six unearned runs.

Catawba’s Jordan Dean hit a solo home run while Madison Hunter (7-3) earned a complete game victory.

Leonhardt drove in the Bears’ lone run with an RBI double in the third inning.
