COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Willingham, Williams win Lenoir-Rhyne football awards

HICKORY – Quarterback Grayson Willingham and linebacker Sherrod Williams were named Tuesday as winners of Player of The Week awards for Lenoir-Rhyne University football.

In a press release, the school said Willingham, a sophomore from Matthews, won Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 300 yards in a 36-32 loss at West Alabama last Thursday night.

Williams, a junior from Edison, Ga., won Defensive Player of the Week after making 10 tackles, two of them for lost yardage. He also had one sack.

Other Player of The Winners: Freshman punter Michael Owen (special teams) of Atlanta, freshman Dalton Stepps (offensive scout team) of Lenoir (West Caldwell High) and freshman Elijah Last (defensive scout team) of Matthews.

WILLINGHAM

Willingham completed 16 of 36 passes and was the first LRU player with 300 passing yards since 2004, and his total is eighth on the Bears’ all-time single game passing list.

He threw two 53-yard TD passes in a span of 10 seconds as the Bears went from trailing 29-19 to ahead 32-29.

Owen averaged 40.2 yards on five punts, hitting one for 53 yards and one of them was inside the 20.

LRU (0-1) plays Saturday on the road, facing North Greenville (S.C.) at 6 p.m.
