COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Dugger again among captains for Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY — Returning star Kyle Dugger is back as a captain for Lenoir-Rhyne University’s football team, which opens the season Aug. 31 at West Alabama.

In an announcement via press release on Tuesday, new Bears head coach Drew Cronic said Dugger, senior T.J. Smith and juniors Jonathan Nolan and Landon Scott are the captains for his first LRU team.

Dugger, a 6-foot-2, 215pound junior from Fayetteville, Ga., was an All-SAC safety last season, after leading the Bears with 87 tackles and six pass breakups. He added 4 ½ tackles for lost yards, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble and had an inception last season and is a first-team preseason All-SAC selection.

Smith (6-0, 180) is a senior wide receiver from Charleston (S.C.) who caught 29 passes for 417 yards and two scores last season. He had at least one catch in all 10 games last year with a season-high 95 yards against Mars Hill, and he is one of only three seniors on this year’s LRU team.

Nolan (5-9, 170), a junior linebacker from Moultrie, Ga., had six tackles for lost yardage a year ago in nine game and added one sack and one fumble recovery.

Scott (6-2, 235) is a junior defensive back from Scottsdale, Ariz. He had 47 tackles last season, a fumble recovery and a team-high three interceptions.
