COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Catawba nips LRU, sends Bears to second straight losing season

SALISBURY – Kenyatta Greene finished with a game-high 142 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, leading Catawba to a 24-20 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) football on Saturday.

Greene broke a 17-all tie with a 5-yard run that capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with five minutes, nine seconds left in the third quarter as the Indians grabbed a 24-17 lead after a successful PAT.

Catawba (9-2, 5-2) ran its win streak over LRU (3-7, 2-5) to three and has won 13 of the last 17 against the Bears.

Catawba finished tied for second in the SAC with Carson-Newman, both one game back of league champion Wingate (9-1, 6-1).

LRU — finishing with three wins for the second straight season and its first back-to-back losing seasons since 2008 and 2009 – finished in sixth place.

Saturday’s game got off to a good start for LRU, as it scored on its first two possessions for a 10-0 lead while picking up 104 of its 229 yards of total offense.

But over their last nine possessions, the Bears were limited to 125 yards. They had a touchdown, a field goal, four punts, an interception and turned the ball over on downs twice in those nine possessions.

LRU’s offense scored once and the Bears got 18 points from their special teams.

After the Bears took a 10-0 lead on a 39-yard field goal by Chase Allbaugh with 7:01 left in the first quarter, Catawba answered with 17 unanswered points. The Indians scored on four of their first seven possessions, including their first two of the second half.

Catawba finished with 392 yards of total offense, 233 of that rushing. That was the sixth time this season – and third straight game – the LRU’s opponent had at least 380 yards of total offense.

Nelson Brown led the Bears’ running game with 104 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries He finished with 1,071 yards and 10 TDs.

Former Maiden High star Xzavion Huff returned a kickoff 100 yards for a TD in the loss.

The Bears are 6-15 overall and 5-9 in the SAC with Kellar at the helm.
