GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – There’s something about Tusculum that brings out the best in Lenoir-Rhyne University football teams and running back Nelson Brown.

Led by Brown, a sophomore from Salisbury, Md., the Bears snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 23-7 win in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) football at Pioneer Field.

LRU (2-3, 1-2) extended its win streak over Tusculum (2-3, 0-2) to six games.

BROWN

Brown rushed for 256 yards – the fourth best rushing game in LRU history – and scored two touchdowns on 30 carries. He has 517 yards on 64 carries and four TDs in his last two games against Tusculum.

Brown has 1,522 career yards.

In addition to his yardage and two scores, Brown also had a 91-yard non-scoring run that broke the previous LRU record of 78 yards set by Wayne Bell against Guilford in 1959.

The Bears jumped on top 10-0 and scored the decisive points when Sam Camargo caught a 15-yard pass from Jarrod Kellar and a PAT gave LRU a 10-0 lead with six minutes, 58 seconds left in the first half.

LRU scored on three of its seven first-half possessions to lead 16-7 at the half.

The Pioneers scored their only points with 12 seconds left in the first half on a 17-yard pass from Alex Ogle to Evan Gates.

LRU rounded out the scoring on a 19-yard run by Brown with 9:40 left to play.

The Bears’ special teams also played a big part in the win with two blocked field goals.

LRU outgained the Pioneers 356-257 and won the ground game 262-49.

The Bears play their homecoming game next Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Moretz Stadium against Newberry, S.C.
