COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Bears score 28 unanswered points, run win streak to 12

RICHMOND, Va. – Lenoir-Rhyne University scored 28 consecutive points on Saturday to run its football win streak to 12 games by beating Virginia Union 28-11 on the road.

YOUNG

Dareke Young, a 6-foot-3, 215 pound junior running back from Raleigh, scored a career-high three touchdowns – two rushing and one receiving – to lead LRU (2-0).

LRU returns home to open South Atlantic Conference play against Newberry on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the final home night game of the regular season.

GAME NOTES

• Virginia Union became just the third team in Drew Cronic’s tenure as LRU head coach to score on its opening possession. The Panthers drove 65 yards but had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Jefferson Souza.

• After scoring 37 points in the first quarter in their opening game, the Bears did not score in the first quarter on Saturday before scoring 21 points in the second quarter.

• Landon Scott two interceptions for the Bears and has five in two games this season.

• Virginia Union running back Tabyus Taylor was the Box to Row National Player of the Week after rushing 25 times for 165 yards against Hampton but was held to 43 yards on 23 carries by LRU.

• LRU rushed 54 times for 223 yards, led by Ameen Stevens with 12 carries for 62 yards while Raja Bradley added 40 yards on 13 carries.

• The Bears now have 506 wins in their 100-year football history.

• LRU’s defense has allowed opponents 36 yards in two games with an average of 0.6 yards per carry under first-year defensive coordinator Joel Taylor.

• Bears quarterback Grayson Willingham’s TD strike to Young gives him 31 for his career. Willingham is tied with Jack Huss for third in program history, and Willingham needs just nine more TDs to break the all-time record, which has stood since Brian Bryson set the mark in 1987.
