COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Huff, Brown carry Lenoir-Rhyne past Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Former Maiden High star Xzavion Huff and sophomore running back Nelson Brown combined for 163 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday night, leading visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University to a 35-7 win over Limestone in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) football.

In a battle of teams picked to finished tied for last in the SAC coaches’ preseason poll, LRU (3-4, 2-3) took advantage of some early turnovers and jumped to a 14-point halftime lead.

The Bears have three games left and need to win at least two of them to avoid a second straight losing season.

Huff, freshman, finished with a career-high 85 yards and one TD on 13 carries while Brown had 78 yards and two TDs on 32 carries. Huff scored on a 39-yard run and Brown scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards.

LRU scored on two of its first five offensive possessions, and Landon Scott returned an interception 95 yards for a TD as the Bears led 21-7 at the half.

The Bears finished with 199 yards rushing – the second highest output this season – and they were plus-3 in turnover margin.

LRU’s defense had four interceptions.

Scott had two of the interceptions for 137 yards setting a school record for interception return yardage in a game. The previous mark was held by Tore Girty against Catawba in 2003 with 100 yards.

With the Bears leading by seven points, Scott’s pick-six were the decisive points as it gave the Bears a 14-0 lead with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

Limestone (3-4, 2-2) scored its only points when Jerko’ya Patton capped a five-play, 56-yard drive with a 38-yard run with 12:51 left in the second quarter.

The Bears’ 35 points were a season high and the most points in a game under head coach Mike Kellar, in his second season, since 37 against Mars Hill in 2015.

LRU has an open date before facing UNC Pembroke on the road at 4 p.m. on Oct. 28.
