HICKORY – Tusculum College hammered Lenoir-Rhyne University 24-4 on Friday to open a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) weekend baseball series at Bears Field.

The Pioneers (19-19, 11-8) and Bears (23-15, 10-9) will play two games on Sunday to complete the series, starting at 2 p.m.

Tusculum built a 9-0 lead on Friday through three innings.

Daulton Martin hit a three-run home run and drove in six runs to spark the Pioneers, who had 25 hits. Jarel McDade added five RBIs for Tusculum.

Junior outfielder Justin Dean had an RBI triple while junior catcher Zack Shoemaker added a run and two hits for LRU.

Charles Hall (4-1) pitched eight innings and earned a win for Tusculum while LRU senior Matt Sullivan fell to 4-3 after taking a loss
