HICKORY – Mount Olive toppled Lenoir-Rhyne University 14-8 on Sunday, sweeping the Bears and leaving them at 1-6 after the first seven games of the season.
Mount Olive improved to 6-1 by winning three straight games over the weekend in Hickory and that left the Beas at 1-6.
LRU’s next game is Tuesday, a 2 p.m. first pitch against Erskine in Due West, S.C.
Sunday’s game featured a grand slam by each team, with Mike McHugh hitting one for LRU and Joe Mason blasting one for Mount Olive.
Every position player in the LRU lineup had a hit with Clayton Jeffries and Zach Shoemaker each going 2-for-5 to lead the way. Jeffries drove in two runs.
Both starters – Jake Conroy for the Bears and Hunter Britt for the Trojans – were going before the fourth inning was done.
Caleb Irwin gained a win in relief for Mount Olive, giving up one earned run on three hits, walked one and striking out four in 6 1/3 innings.
Kevin LaRosa gave up five runs (three earned) and took the loss without getting an out.
Mason went 2-for-4 for the Trojans and he walked twice.
LRU has lost five straight games.
