COLLEGE BASEBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne clips Barton in first game of season

FLORENCE, S.C. – Hunter Martin struck out nine and Landon Whitson pitched a scoreless ninth inning Friday, leading Lenoir-Rhyne University to a win in its season-opening baseball game.

The Bears nipped Barton 3-2 in the Carolinas Hospital System Classic at Sparrow Stadium. They end the tournament Saturday with games against Southern Wesleyan at 11 a.m. and Francis Marion at 5 p.m.

Martin, a junior from Stanfield, worked six innings and gave up two runs before Whitson, a senior from Marion, gained a save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Will Jones, a freshman third baseman from Clayton, had a two-run triple in the third-inning for LRU.

Noah Almond had two hits for Barton and drove in a run, and Dylan Ward took the loss after pitching six innings. Ward gave up two earned runs.
