COLLEGE BASEBALL: Coker holds off Lenoir-Rhyne (7-12)

HICKORY – Coker got the outs it needed with the tying run at the plate for Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday, beating the Bears 10-8.

The visiting Cobras (9-8-1) left LRU at 7-12 as the Bears prepare for a 7 p.m. game on Friday against Queens at BB&T Ballpark.

Coker won by matching LRU (6-7) with 12 hits and getting five strong innings from reliever Griffin Hollifield (five hits, two runs allowed, five strikeouts).

Caleb Beatty led the Bears, going 3-for-5, while Clayton Jeffries had two hits and two RBIs and Will Jones had two walks, scored two runs and drove in a run.

Reliever Nolan Flachofsky took the loss for LRU, throwing one inning and allowing three runs on four walks and three hits.

R.J. Ball paced Coker by going 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Lake Lybrand, Chase Bruno and Tanner Crobsy each added two hits for the Cobras.

LRU dropped to 4-7 at home this season.
