COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears at .500 in league after split with Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — A split of a doubleheader on Saturday with Carson-Newman on the road left Lenoir-Rhyne University at .500 in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball.

The Bears won the first game 8-5 and the Eagles won the nightcap 5-0.

LRU is 26-18 overall and 12-12 in the SAC while Carson-Newman is 22-20, 13-11.

The Bears’ next game is Tuesday against Limestone with a 6 p.m. start in Gaffney, S.C.

LRU 8, Carson-Newman 5

Junior outfielder Justin Dean went 4-for-4, hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Bears, who never trailed. Dean is hitting .413 this season.

Senior third baseman Tripp Hamrick and sophomore shortstop Corbin Watson added two-run doubles for the Bears, who outhit the Eagles 14-7.

LRU sophomore John Grigg improved to 8-1 after earning a win while senior Landon Whitson pitched three scoreless innings for his school-record ninth save of the year.

Carson-Newman’s Ethan Goforth finished with three hits and an RBI while Dalton Long fell to 2-4 after suffering a loss.

Carson-Newman 5, LRU 0

The Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a five-run sixth inning started by Goforth’s RBI double. Two of the Eagles’ runs were unearned as the Bears made four errors in the inning.

Goforth finished with two hits while Charlie Brown had three hits.

Carson-Newman’s Matt Bradley pitched six scoreless innings and improved to 1-1 while LRU senior Patrick LaGanke fell to 0-2 after being tagged with a loss in relief.
