HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University has signed two women’s tennis players, one from Ohio and one from North Carolina.

On Thursday in a press release from the LRU sports information office, the school announced women’s tennis head coach Tom Rees landed Alexander Garofoli of Springboro, Ohio and Spencer Cochran of Charlotte for 2018-19.

Garofoli is ranked No. 12 in the Ohio for U18 players. Her accolades include two greater Western Ohio Conference singles championships and one Greater Western Ohio doubles title.

She is also a two-time district qualifier and a sectional winner with a 2017 overall record of 26-3 in combined singles and doubles play.

“Ally (Garofoli) is ready to shine … She has done it all in high school tennis and has the ability to excel at the collegiate level,” Rees said in the release.

Cochran is the first player from Mallard Creek High to qualify for the state 4A championship tournament, and she’s ranked 29th among U18 players in the state. She played on a conference-winning doubles team in 2014, was an All-MECKA first-team pick in 2015 and was named conference player of the year in 2016.

“Spencer’s passion and drive to excel on and off the court makes her a perfect fit for Lenoir-Rhyne,” Rees said in the release. “She has a heart for service and always put the team first. Spencer is super talented and I am looking forward to helping her develop her game at the college level.”

LRU is 2-0 in fall matches this season and will open its next season in an exhibition on Feb. 10 at UNC Asheville.
