WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Brown leads Lenoir-Rhyne past Mars Hill

MARS HILL – Scoring the final three goals of a conference match, the Lenoir-Rhyne University women beat Mars Hill on the road on Wednesday night 4-2.

Abbie Brown finished with a goal and an assist as LRU improved to 3-2-1 overall and evened its South Atlantic Conference (SAC) record at 1-1.

Mars Hill dropped to 1-6, 0-2 after the Bears wiped out a 2-1 deficit to win.

Abigael McGarel gave LRU an early lead with a goal in the 16th minutes on a penalty kick but the Lions tied it 1-all less than a minute later and scored to go up 2-1.

The Bears’ Claire Neibergall scored in the 60th minute for a 2-all tie and LRU gained the lead about 19 minutes later on a goal by Taylor Rios.

Brown had an assist on Neibergall’s goal and again on Rios’ score. Brown made it 4-2 when she scored in the 87th minute.

LRU had a 26-3 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage on shots on goal.

The four goals were the most by the Bears this season with Neibergall, Rios and McGarel each scoring for the first time. LRU had not scored four goals in a match since Sept. 2 of last season when it had six in a win over USC Aiken.

The Bears’ next match comes Saturday at 1 p.m., a league battle at Newberry, S.C.
