WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: O’Connor wins in playoff, leads Bears to tourney title

MONROE – Ainee O’Connor rallied to win an individual title on the first playoff hole, and Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women won the Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge on Tuesday at the Rolling Hills Country Club.

The Bears finished at 39-over par 615 to edge Wingate by 10 strokes in the team standings on a par-72, 5,968-yard course, wrapping up a second team title this spring.

O’Connor — a sophomore from Kent, United Kingdom – beat King’s Nicola Robertson in the playoff after both shot a 5-over par 149. O’Connor shot a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday, the top round by an individual in the two-day event, after she was tied for 21st through the first round on Monday.

The Bears’ next event is Monday and Tuesday in the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic in Wallace, where UNC Pembroke will play host at the River Landing Golf Club.
