MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne nips Newberry, ties for second in league

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men nipped visiting Newberry (S.C.) 4-3 on Saturday to tie Carson-Newman for second in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) soccer regular season.

The Bears (10-2-3, 6-2-2) earned a home quarterfinal match in the conference tournament when it begins on Tuesday. That match will be at 7 p.m. against a team to be announced when the SAC pairings are set.

LRU has won five straight matches.

Four Bears scored in the victory, with Ignacio de Goya leading the way with his team-best 12th of the season. He added an assist.

Till Neumann, who leads the league in total points, scored twice in the second half for Newberry (5-8-3, 3-6-1). He has 13 goals this season.

The Bears’ first goal on Saturday came from freshman Joseph Linley, just one minute 24 seconds in.

LRU led in shots taken 24-15.

Goalkeeper Zach King of LRU made three saves and Brad Dixon had four saves for Newberry.
