Lenoir-Rhyne sports: McAllister league’s top scholar-athlete in women’s lacrosse

HICKORY – Noreen McAllister of Lenoir-Rhyne University has been named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s lacrosse.

McAllister, from Bayport, N.Y., graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education. Her grade point average was 3.84.

She lettered four years for the Bears (2014-17) while starting every game the last two seasons and finished her career with 71 ground balls.

McAllister was a team captain as a junior and senior as LRU won three straight SAC regular season titles and played in the league championship match three times.

“Noreen has an incredible work ethic both on and off the field and she truly exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete,” LRU head coach Carlee Buck said in a news release. “This is a tremendous honor and very well deserved.”

As part of her student teacher internship, McAllister observed 78 hours, assisted 224 hours and taught 168 hours for two years and was a long-term substitute at Northview Middle School.

Football camp at HHS: LRU has announced two football camps, one in June and one in July.

On June 20, a Bears Travel Camp is scheduled at Hickory High from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with registration ($30) beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Youth Football Camp: LRU’s annual Youth Camp is scheduled July 10-13 on campus. The four-day camp has a cost of $110 and is from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Awards and a luncheon are set for July 13 at noon.

Youth co-ed camp: Lenoir-Rhyne University has scheduled a youth co-ed basketball camp for June 12-16 at Shuford Gym.

The camp director is LRU men’s basketball coach Everick Sullivan.

The registration fee is $125.

Camp instructors will include college players and coaching staff members. It will have 5-on-5 play and a focus on fundamental skills and drill work.

Cross country: Aubrey Hites, a junior from Pelion, S.C., with a 3.87 grade point average while majoring in biology, won All-District academic honors.

His selection was by the College Sports Information Directors of American (coSIDA) for District 3 in NCAA Division II.

Hites has lettered for three years in men’s cross country and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

He holds two school records – indoor 800-meter run in 1:57.154 and the same event in outdoor (1:54.75).
