COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne nips Queens, picks up 10th win of season

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University picked up its 10th women’s volleyball victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at home, edging Queens 3-2 in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match.

The Bears won 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 11-25 and 15-13 to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.

Queens fell to 6-9, 2-5.

LRU had 17 blocks in the victory and won the fifth set after Queens had won the fourth set 25-11 to stay alive.

The Royals led 6-2 in the fourth set before the Bears got within two points.

Queens built a 10-5 lead and forced LRU into a timeout after the Bears had made consecutive errors and the Royals increased their edge to 20-10.

Queens closed the fourth set by scoring five straight points.

LRU had a run of six points to build a 12-10 lead in the fifth set. Queens rallied for a 13-all tie before the Bears scored two points to win.

The Bears’ next matches are in league and at home on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. Tusculum visits LRU on Friday night and Lincoln Memorial is Saturday’s opponent.

LRU 3, Catawba 0 (Friday)

The Bears picked up their ninth win in women’s volleyball, sweeping visiting Catawba in a SAC match.

Hannah Houston led LRU for the second straight time with a match-high 11 kills. She had a career-best 17 kills on Tuesday night in a win over Mars Hill.

Senior Angelica Arroyo had double-digit kills against the Indians, her fourth match this season with 10 or more. She had 10 against the Indians plus eight digs and one ace.

Also for LRU, senior setter Jessica Funk handed out 33 assists and finished with a double-double, adding 10 digs. She was instrumental in the Bears closing out the third set as she served four straight crucial points down the stretch.

LRU’s sweep of Catawba was its sixth sweep of the season.
