ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the first time, Lenoir-Rhyne University has produced the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Woman of the Year.

In press release announcement by league officials on Monday, the Bears’ Haylea Salamon, a recent graduate, was tabbed for the award.

A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, she graduated from LRU in May with a degree in Health and Exercise Science and a grade point average of 3.95.

Twice selected as an academic All-American, Salamon was the top graduate for LRU’s College of Health Sciences — earning Summa Cum Laude honors — and she was also the Student Government Associate President’s Award winner.

Salamon was also exceptional on the track, earning SAC Female Field Athlete of the Year honors in 2015 and 2016. She was also named Female Freshman of the Year in 2015, and she won three SAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus, while placing in the top 10 in the shot put, javelin and hammer throw all four years.

She earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region in the shot put and discus in both indoor and outdoor track and field five times, and was also a NCAA Division II second team All-American in the discus in 2015.

During Salamon’s career, the Bears finished in the top three at the SAC Championships three times.

Salamon was the senior class president, a resident assistant and a peer mentor. She also helped establish the Clyde Campbell Elementary School Boys Running Club, was the president of the Chi Alpha Sigma Athlete Honor Society and was treasurer of the Chi Beta Phi Math and Science Honor Society.

In the community, she spent time working in the LRU athletic department and was a volunteer at the Sherbrooke Senior Center in Saskatoon, Saskatewan.

Salamon is now eligible for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.
