OPELIKA, Ala. – The weather was hot on Sunday at the Barbasol Championship, and J.T. Poston was even hotter.
Posting seven birdies, Poston shot a fourth-round 66 – his best round of the tournament – to finish at 68-72-68-66—274 (10-under par) and tie for 42nd in the 25th event of his rookie season on the PGA Tour.
Poston, a prep golf star at Hickory and college star at Western Carolina, had 20 birdies over four rounds.
On Sunday, he had birdies at holes No. 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 16 to more than offset a bogey at No. 3 and No. 17 as he raised his career PGA Tour earnings to more than $621,000.
Grayson Murray of Raleigh gained his first PGA Tour victory, setting a tournament record at 67-64-54-68—263 to go 21-under par. Chad Collins finished at 67-60-68-66—264, one stroke back.
Poston made his 17th cut this season.
The next PGA Tour events are the Bridgestone in Akron, Ohio, on Aug. 3-6 and, on the same dates, the Barracuda in Reno, Nev.
Poston is not on the Bridgestone entry list, and the PGA website says golfers have until this Friday to indicate they’ll be in the field in Reno.
