HUNTER HARVEY: On target in consecutive games against Reds, drops ERA to 2.78

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey is pitching well this season for the Washington Nationals, appearing in his 50th major league game on Sunday against Cincinnati.  He has battled injuries for most of his big league career but appears to be finding his zone. He is 0-0 with an ERA of 2.78 with 27 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings this season. The Nationals start a three-game series on Tuesday against visiting Oakland.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hunter Harvey has reached 50 appearances in the major leagues — pitching on Saturday and Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds — and is showing signs of finding a groove for the Washington Nationals.

Harvey, a former Bandys High star in his first season with the Nationals, pitched in a 6-2 home loss oln Saturday. He worked one inning (eighth), allowing one hit and striking out two, and threw strikes on 11 of his 15 pitches to four batters before a crowd of 30,325.

He was consistently as good on Sunday when the Nationals beat the Reds 3-2, gaining his third hold of the season.

Harvey allowed one hit and struck out two in the seventh inning, throwing strikes on 13 of his 16 pitches. He faced four batters before a crow of 31,411.

He is now 0-0 with an ERA of 2.78 for the season with 27 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings.

After 50 big league games, he is 1-2 with an ERA of 3.11 with 51 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings.

Washington is off on Monday and then plays a three-game home series against Oakland before facing the New York Mets for three games on Friday through Sunday.

The Nationals’ next home series starts Sept. 13 against Baltimore, the team that drafted Harvey with the No. 22 pick in the 2013 amateur draft.

After being placed on waivers by Washington, he was claimed by the San Francisco Giants but did not pitch and was waived just as the season to begin.

The Nationals claimed Harvey and he spent a few days in Triple A before they called him back to the major leagues.
