WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey found his zone over the weekend in two relief appearances against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Hunter, a hard-charging right-hander with a high velocity fastball and the courage to challenge hitters to hit it, struck out the side in the ninth inning Friday night in a 6-2 loss to the Cardinals.
On Saturday, he faced three batters in the sixth inning, striking out two, in an eventual 7-6 victory over St. Louis.
Harvey did not pitch on Sunday in a 5-0 win by the Cardinals.
The Nationals start a series at home against the New York Mets on Monday. They play at Philadelphia on Thursday through Sunday and at the Chicago Cubs on July 8-10. The next home series for Washington is July 12-14 against San Diego.
Harvey had pinpoint control in his two outings –Friday, he threw 12 pitches and nine for strikes and three strikeouts before a crowd of 30, 170. On Saturday, he threw 12 pitches with 11 for strikes (and two strikeouts) before a crowd of 34,440.
Harvey is 0-0 this season in 12 games for the Nationals with an ERA of 2.53 and 14 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.
As a pro, Harvey is 1-2 with an ERA of 3.15 in 38 games with 37 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings.
