HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: N-C nips Bandys, advances to 2A dual-team final

Red Devils, already owning 3 titles, get eighth shot to win it all

LINCOLNTON – Newton-Conover High emerged from a mini-Catawba Valley 2A Athletic tournament on Wednesday, winning the West 2A dual-team wrestling championship.

STATE 2A DUAL-TEAM FINAL
Saturday, 4 p.m., Greensboro
East No. 1 Bunn (27-1) vs. West No. 1 NEWTON-CONOVER (47-1)

The third and fourth rounds at Lincolnton pitted No. 11 Bandys against No. 10 West Lincoln, and the top-seeded Red Devils against No. 12 Lincolnton.

After beating Lincolnton 41-33, the Red Devils edged Bandys 36-33 for the West 2A crown. Bandys – the defending state champ – had advanced with a 35-29 decision over West Lincoln.

At 47-1, head coach Eddy Clark’s Red Devils are going Saturday to wrestle East No. 1 seed Bunn (27-1) at the Greensboro Coliseum (4 p.m.) for the state 2A title.

Bunn faced Bandys in last year’s 2A dual final with the Trojans finishing with 10 pins in a 60-18 vitctory.

This is Newton-Conover’s eighth trip to the dual-team final and its first since 2017.

The Red Devils own three state dual-team crowns and last won it all in 2016.
