HICKORY – Chris Cohens, the first Hickory High wrestler to reach the state tournament in 12 years, has signed to wrestle at Queens University.

Cohens’ decision was announced via a Hickory Public Schools press release on Wednesday.

He was a junior captain for the Red Tornadoes last year, when he qualified for the state tournament after gaining his third bid into the West Regionals and went 31-6. He had a 26-9 record as a sophomore.

“I’ve coached a lot of wrestlers, but his combined work ethics, both on the mat and in the classroom, are exemplary,” Hickory head coach Tim Correll said in the press release. “I’ve coached him in football and now wrestling and I have to say he is top notch and he is any coach’s dream.

“Chris is a team leader and deserves this opportunity to get to the next level and wrestle for Queens University.”

Cohens’ scholarship to Queens is combination of academics, athletics and grants, the press release said.

“I chose Queens University because of its great rate of students getting jobs right out of college,” Cohens said in the press release. “I also like the feel of the campus and the institution itself as a whole.”

Cohens, who began wrestling in the sixth grade, plans to major in Exercise Science and become an athletic trainer or strength coach.
