Securing the wins it needed in the higher weight classes on Wednesday night, Bandys High’s resurgence in state 2A wrestling took another step with a 33-31 victory over Trinity for the West 2A dual-team championship.
The Trojans, wrestling at home, eliminated Trinity after beating Catawba Valley 2A foe West Lincoln 31-30, and Trinity knocked out another CVAC 2A team, Newton-Conover, 38-27, to get a shot at the top-seeded Trojans.
Bandys — twice a state 2A dual-team champion (2005, 2006) with three state 2A individual team titles also on its resume (2004-2006) – wrestles East No. 1 Bunn for a state 2A title on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse.
It will be the Trojans’ first 2A dual-team title match not against Croatan, the foe Bandys beat in 2005 (45-16) and 2006 (35-26) under head coach Forrest Blake.
Foard repeats West title, faces Union Pines next
Fred T. Foard repeated as West 3A champion, winning at home 81-0 over Eastern Guilford and then 48-30 over Ashe County.
Those victories earn the top-seeded Tigers a battle with East top seed Union Pines on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse.
Foard is headed to its fourth state dual-team championship match. The Tigers on a 2020 title in 2A, defeating Croatan 59-9.
The Tigers posted a 41-27 win over Eden Morehead for a 3A title in 2013, and Morehead beat Foard 38-28 the next year. Foard downed Morehead 30-23 to win in 3A.
Foard’s wrestling resume also includes team titles in the 2011 and 2018 state 3A individual tournaments at the Greensboro Coliseum.
