Foard has 8, Bandys and N-C have 5
still in chase for state championships

GREENSBORO – Twenty area wrestlers – 19 of them from the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic Conference – have won quarterfinal matches at the state 2A championship tournament in Greensboro.
Those two dozen are among 30 wrestlers still alive in the title brackets who wrestle in Greater Hickory area conferences.
Fred T. Foard — coming off a state 3A dual-team title and the Western Foothills 3A champion — has eight wrestlers still alive.
In 2A, Bandys, the state 2A dual-team champion, has five, Newton-Conover also has five and Bunker Hill has four.
The tournament continues on Friday and Saturday.
At mid-day on Friday, Bandys (58.0) led the 2A chase for a team title over Newton-Conover (53.0) and Bunker Hill (48.5).
Also, Fred T. Foard was well ahead in the 3A team title chase with 87.5 points with Central Academy (49.0) and Cape Fear (45.5 ) next.
Wilmington Laney is the 4A leader with 75 points, ahead of Pinecrest (59.0) and Lake Norman (45.0).
A highlight among area wrestlers in 2A is three of the quarterfinal winners at 120 pounds and at 160 pounds were from the CVAC 2A.
At 120, Bandys’ Boedi Kirkland (29-4) won a decision, Newton-Conover’s Camden Spencer (49-7) won by a pin and Bunker Hill’s Raul Hernandez (40-6) won by decision.
At 160, Caleb Moore of Bandys (46-2) and Brayden Guess of Bunker Hill (42-4) won by pins and Josh White of Lincolnton won by decision.
There are two CVAC 2A wrestlers still going at 145, 152 and 170.
At 145, Lincolnton’s Quinlan Hunter (41-7) and East Burke’s Caleb Johnson-White (26-4) advanced via pins, while Dilan Patton of Patton (37-2) won by decision and Newton-Conover’s Jason Brawley (43-8) posted a pin at 152.
Ian Moore of Bandys (24-4) and Donta Davis of Bunker Hill (17-10) advanced at 170 by pins.
Four Foard wrestlers moved on with pins, Dawson Cody (35-11) at 138, Connor Weaver (35-13) at 152, Colby Mace (36-2) at 195 and Dylan Smith (44-1) at 220.
Cody could face North Iredell’s Bray Trivette at 138, as Trivette (39-1) and North Lincoln’s Joseph Plyler (46-7 at 170) are the only other Western Foothills 3A wrestlers still alive.
The Northwestern 3A-4A had only one wrestler in the quarterfinals – at 120 pounds – and Jonah McBurney of South Caldwell was pinned.
