DUAL-TEAM WRESTLING: E. Lincoln, Foard, W. Lincoln host sites for opening rounds in 2A

Three of the four sites for the opening rounds of the state high school dual-team wrestling tournaments are local in the 2A bracket.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) released the pairings on Monday morning to start a week in which the dual-team championship teams will be determined by Saturday.

In 2A, first-round host sites include East Lincoln, Fred T. Foard and West Lincoln,  all with 6 p.m. start times and admission at $6 at each site.

Four teams at each first-round site will battle, with the winning teams also wrestling a second-round match to determine who gets to the next round on Thursday (third round, state semifinals).

The winners in East and West finals on Thursday advance to the state championships on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum with two title matches at noon and two title matches at 3 p.m.

2A

West Lincoln (22-2), the South Fork 2A’s No. 2 team and its conference tournament champion, opens the postseason against Surry Central (17-6). The other teams at West Lincoln are Central Academy (27-1) and West Wilkes (24-1).

East Lincoln (25-4) got in from the South Fork 2A as a wild card and first wrestles Canton Pisgah (17-4), with East Gaston (5-9) and Madison (15-7) also coming to Denver, N.C.

At Fred T. Foard, the Tigers (22-3, Northwestern Foothills 2A regular-season and tournament champion)) faces North Surry (17-6) in the first round. Patton (31-8), also from the Northwestern Foothills 2A, got in via a wild card and meets Mount Pleasant at Foard.

South Fork 2A regular-season champion Newton-Conover (41-2) and Northwestern Foothills 2A No. 2 Bunker Hill (23-10) open the tournament at R-S Central. The Red Devils meet Brevard and the Bears face R-S Central.

3A

The top two 3A teams in the Northwestern 3A-4A – St. Stephens (38-0) and Alexander Central (17-16) – will open at Statesville and Piedmont Middle School, respectively.

St. Stephens, after dominating in the Northwestern 3A-4A regular-season and conference tournament, battles Statesville (30-11) on the road. Enka (22-5) and Kings Mountain (38-5) are also going to Statesville.

Alexander Central meets West Rowan (17-3) at Piedmont Middle School, where North Gaston (15-13) faces Piedmont (31-2).

4A

McDowell (15-20) gained the lone 4A bid from the Northwestern 3A-4A and opens against High Point Central (19-11) at Mooresville. Mooresville (31-1) faces West Forsyth (11-8) in the other first-round match.
