Fred T. Foard High assured an opportunity to defend its state 2A volleyball title on Wednesday by locking up at least a Northwestern Foothills 2A co-title and the league’s top postseason bid.

The Tigers beat second-place Patton 25-12, 25-23, 25-8 at Foard in a morning match to assure they’ll do no worse than share the conference title with the Panthers.

Foard is 12-0 in the league — which plays a 14-match schedule — Patton (8-2) is two matches back and the rest of the conference’s teams have at least three losses.

Since Foard has swept Patton and owns the tiebreaker, the victory on Wednesday secured the No. 1 state 2A playoff spot for the Tigers.

Patton, West Iredell (7-3) and Draughn (5-5) are vying for second place and the league’s other automatic postseason bid.

Foard has won 38 straight league matches and closes the regular season with matches at home against East Burke (Dec. 30) and with a trip to West Iredell (Jan 4).

The Northwestern Foothills 2A will not play a conference tournament.

Bears cancel match

Bunker Hill has announced its Northwestern Foothills 2A match on Tuesday at West Iredell is cancelled.

The schools do not currently plan to reschedule the match.

The Bears are 3-5 in the league and share fifth place with East Burke while West Iredell is 7-3 and in third place.

The conference gets two automatic playoff bids. Fred T. Foard has locked up at least a co-championship (and the No. 1 postseason bid) and Patton is 8-2 and in second place.

Fred T. Foard 3, Draughn (Tuesday)

The Tigers won 25-5, 5-10, 25-7 at home behind 18 kills, 11 digs and four aces from Michelle Thao and 12 kills and eight digs by Megan Dorsey.

Foard also got eight blocks by Martina Foster and five by Jamianne Foster plus 24 assists and 10 digs by Hailey Johnston, 21 assists from Sarah Ling and Lyndsey Warren added 10 digs.

Fred T. Foard 3, West Caldwell 0 (Monday)

Foster had eight kills and two blocks, Averie Dale had six kills and two blocks and Foster had seven kills and two blocks in a 25-4, 25-6, 25-10 road victory by the Tigers.

Johnston contributed 23 assists and Laney Craig made five kills for Foard.

Maiden 3, North Lincoln 0 (Monday)

The Blue Devils won 25-9, 25-22, 25-17 on the road to stay in front in the South Fork 2A.

Maiden is 7-1 in the league, ahead of East Lincoln (4-1).

Lainee Hentschel had 23 digs to pace the Blue Devils and Abby Gantt added 19 assists and Adison Ford had 16. Savannah Lail (nine) and Grace Kilby (eight) led Maiden in kills.

The South Fork 2A has revised its original 14-match schedule and its champion will be determined via an 11-match slate because not all conference teams will be able to finish 14 matches by the scheduled end of the regular season.

Maiden will get in 13 leagues matches. The Blue Devils return to action on Dec. 29 with two matches at Maiden as part of a tripleheader there (versus East Lincoln and Newton-Conover; the other match is the starter at 1 p.m., East Lincoln against Newton-Conover).

North Lincoln is on schedule to play all of its 14 matches, including two on Dec. 29 at Bandys (11 a.m. versus Lincolnton, 1 p.m. versus Bandys).
