HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEBALL: Draughn, Foard among those reaching Round 3

N. Iredell, Watauga also still live for Thursday’s matches

Thursday’s third round of the state volleyball playoffs will include four teams from Greater Hickory area leagues, highlighted by home matches for North Iredell (3A) and Watauga (4A).

Draughn (15-9), a No. 9 seed in 1A, remains alive and goes to No. 1 Union Academy (24-2) on Thursday at 6 p.m.

in 3A, it’s No. 25 Lake Norman Charter (13-10) at top-seeded North Iredell (29-0) at 6 p.m. and No. 10 Foard (20-9) at West Rowan (22-3), also at 6 p.m.

Watauga (22-2), a No. 2 seed in 4A, is at home at 6 p.m., facing No. 10 Marvin Ridge (23-7).

The fourth round is Saturday, and the state championships are Nov. 5 at N.C. State.

Fred T. Foard 3, Oak Grove 0

Averie Dale’s triple-double — 11 kills, 12 digs and 22 assists — helped No. 10 Foard overwhelm No. 7 Oak Grove on the road on Tuesday in the second round. She also had four blocks and two aces.

Laney Craig added 13 kills and five digs, Maya Beatty had 10 kills and 16 digs and Taylor Ramseur provided five kills and three blocks for the Tigers, who won 25-15, 25-19, 25-16.

Foard also received 18 digs by Natigan Crutchfield and 14 assists from Camym Partin.

If the Tigers win on Thursday, they’ll play a fourth-round match on Saturday against No. 11 West Henderson or No. 3 Kings Mountain. Foard would play host to West Henderson and travel to Kings Mountain.

North Stanly 3, Maiden 1

The Blue Devils, a No. 7 seed after sharing the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic regular-season title with Bandys and then beating the Trojans in the league tournament, fell in straight sets to the No. 23 Comets.

Visiting North Stanly won 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17 as Maiden finished 20-7.

Payton Miller has 12 kills and 16 digs to lead Maiden against the Comets (15-10), who play at No. 7 Southwestern Randolph on Thursday in the third round.

Emily Dover added kills, Averie Waddell had four kills and 13 digs, Aleah Ikard contributed seven assists and 18 digs and Annalee Smith posted 22 assists and 16 digs for the Blue Devils.

Maiden 3, Hendersonville 1 (first round)

The Blue Devils opened the 2A bracket with a four-set home victory over the 26th-seeded Bearcats on Saturday.

Ilysa Barr sparked Maiden with 17 kills and 12 digs and Miller provided 17 kills and 15 digs.

Ikard added 11 assists and 11 digs, Smith posted 16 digs and 35 assists, Parker Sweet had 14 diges and Callie Stamey finished with eight kills and two blocks.

Fred T. Foard 3, South Rowan 0 (first round)

The Tigers opened the state 3A playoffs at home on Saturday, sweep the Raiders 25-8, 25-14, 25-13.

Dale ignited Foard with 12 kills, six digs and 19 assists while Partin posted seven digs, 18 assists and two aces.

Craig provided nine kills ande 10 digs, Beatty posted 13 kills, eight digs and three aces and Ramseur had five4 kills and two blocks.’

Also for Foard: five kills by Samaria Tipps and 11 digs and two aces by Crutchfield.

Maiden 3, Bandys 1 (CVAC 2A tournament final)

Maiden, seeded No. 2 for the league tournament after tying Bandys at 13-1 for the title, added the conference tournament title on Oct. 19 at West Lincoln.

The Blue Devils won 31-29, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23 for their second win over the Trojans this season.

Miller , Smith and Ikard had double-doubles — Miller with 14 kills and 24 digs, Smith with 21 assists and 15 digs and Ikard with 14 assist and 13 digs.

Barr provided 10 aces and seven kills, Emily Dover had six kills, Kennedy Noble provided 11 digs and Sweet added 10 digs for the Blue Devils.

Maiden opened the tournament at home, beating No. 7 Newton-Conover and reached the title match with a 3-0 win over No. 3 East Burke at West Lincoln.

North Iredell 3, Fred T. Foard 0 (Western Foothills 3A tournament final)

Regular-season champion North Iredell added the conference tournament title to its regular-season crown with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 over second-seeded Foard at North Iredell on Oct. 19.
Dale had six kills, seven digs, 19 assists and five blocks to lead Foard, which had previously lost 3-0 at North Iredell in the regular season and 3-1 at Foard.
In the tournament final, Craig had 10 kills and 13 digs, Beatty had seven kills, 13 digs and two aces while Crutchfield closed with 23 digs and Ramseur made five kills.
Foard had only one other league loss, 3-2 at St. Stephens on the conference’s fourth playing date (lSept. 8).
