GREENSBORO — Sophia Ritter’s third place in the 3,200-meter was the top finish among Northwestern 3A-4A participants on Sunday in the state 3A track and field championships at North Carolina A&T.
Ritter ran the 3,200 in 11:08.96.
In a limited field of participants from the conference, the top boys’ finish was a third in the discus (162-03) and a fourth in the shot put (50-03 1/4) by Lyndon Strickland of Alexander Central.
Weddington’s boys won the state title with 63 points, finishing ahead of Winston-Salem Parkland (47) while the Durham Hillside girls nipped Winston-Salem Parkland 62-61 to capture a state title.
The meet was originally scheduled for Friday but delayed until Sunday at the Irwin Belk Track by rainy weather.
Eagles relay team wins
Lincoln Charter’s boys’ 3,200-meter relay team won a state 1A title, also at North Carolina A&T, with a team of 8:17.42 as the Eagles finished 10th.
Kenny Schild, Drew Zink, Kinser Hudson and Micah Smith ran the 3,200 for Lincoln Charter.
Zink added fourth-place finishes in the 1,600 (4:36.82) and 3,200 (10:06.89) and Smith was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:04.21).
Polk County’s boys scored 44 points to edge Edenton Holmes (38) for a state title.
Murphy won the girls’ title with 60 points, finishing ahead of Research Triangle (57).
