Saturday could be another big day for Fred T. Foard High’s multi-sport star Alexis Woglemuth.
A senior, Woglemuth is chasing her fourth state girls’ tennis title. On Friday, she won two matches and is now two wins away for a 3A singles title.
Woglemuth played on state title 2A doubles teams as a freshman and sophomore and won a singles championship a year ago.
Woglemuth’s semifinal opponent at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday is Jessica Fuchs of Oak Grove. That winner meets Chloe Harrington of Northern Nash or Ellia Strickler of Carrboro for a state title.
Woglemuth opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Oak Grove’s Marlie Stephenson and then advanced by eliminating Ryan Hanes of Carrboro 6-1, 6-4.
In addition to tennis, Woglemuth has starred in basketball and soccer for the Tigers and been a kicker on the varsity football team.
Woglemuth’s mom — Jennifer Howard (maiden name) — is one of the top female athletes in local sports history. After a sterling career at Foard, she signed with N.C. State and was a basketball star (point guard) for the Wolfpack (three-time academic All-American, 73 wins on three NCAA tournament teams and twice made a record nine 3-pointers in a game). She was drafted by the WNBA’s Cleveland Rockers in 1997 and played in four games in 1999.
All of the other players or teams from the three Greater Hickory areas were eliminated by the second round.
