Newton-Conover High’s Brann Reid — the defending state 2A singles champion — is still alive in this year’s state tournament.
Reid beat Andy Casados of Lexington 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and South Columbus’ Griffin Hanna 6-1, 6-0 on Friday at the Cary Tennis Park to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Reid faces Seth Worley of Lexington in one semifinal while the other semifinal pits Lucieyn Stein of First Flight against Josh Abramis of North Carolina School of Science and Math.
A 6-3, 6-2 victory in last year’s 2A final over Depei Yu of Science and Math made Reid the Red Devils’ first state singles champion since Brian Riley in 1986.
Luke Laney of Maiden reached the second round on Friday, falling to Abrams after advancing to that round with a 6-4, 6-0 first-round victory over Tyler Mills of Forest Hills.
Maiden’s Patrick Lichtenwalner and East Lincoln’s Chase Hines were eliminated in the first round on Friday.
Watauga’s doubles team of Ryan Trate and Andrew Ganley was ousted in the first round of 3A doubles at the Burlington Tennis Center on Friday, falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Luke Albertsonand Mark Yamane of Mount Tabor.
There were no 4A tennis players from the Northwestern 3A-4A in the state tournament.
