SPRING SPORTS: W. Lincoln picks up baseball win; Hickory starts girls’ soccer at 1-0

West Lincoln High opened the baseball season on Tuesday with a 5-4 victory over visiting Fred T. Foar, winning on a walk-off, two-run double by Chris Moxley.

Samuel Duncan went 3-for-4 and drove in a run, Moxley had a hit and drove in two runs and Brandon Lail had an RBI as the Rebels won an endowment game.

Moxley pitched five innings, giving up three runs (all earned) with six strikeouts and four walks.

Nick Morton pitched an inning for West Lincoln, giving up an unearned run, and Dylan Smith was the winning pitcher after throwing a scoreless inning and walked one.

West Lincoln, 10-16 last season in head coach John Markley’s first year, plays Wednesday afternoon at East Burke.

Foard, 12-10 a year ago, is in its 11th season under head coach Channon Vogel and plays its home debut on Friday at 6 p.m. against Bandys.

The Tigers also play on Saturday, facing Hickory in a noon game at Hickory.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hickory 8, West Iredell 1

Izzi Wood and Ayden Vaughn each scored twice and had an assist to lead the Red Tornadoes to a season-opening victory.

Jess LeFrancis, Elizabeth Betancourt, Addie Barrier and Caroline Moore also scored one goal for Hickory.

LeFrancis and Barrier each had two assist for the Red Tornadoes, who got two saves in goal for Hickory.

Helen Summerell scored for West Iredell.

Hickory plays Crest at Hickory at 5 p.m. on Wednesday while West Iredell’s home match on Wednesday against Newton-Conover starts at 6 p.m.
