Craft, a former starting catcher at HHS, is 432-263 at his alma mater and 452-282 overall in his 29th season as a prep baseball head coach.

The 25 runs scored by Hickory were the most since a 24-7 victory at Newton-Conover in early March of 2010, and they scored at least 20 runs for only the third time in 22 seasons (20-1 over West Caldwell in 2009 is the other time).

Craft’s 735th career game as a head coach comes Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Taylorsville, where the Red Tornadoes open their Northwestern 3A-4A schedule against Alexander Central.

The Patriots won a Northwestern 3A-4A opener on the road, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, but Watauga head coach Seth Freeman has filed a protest.

Radio station WATA in Boone reports Watauga led 3-2 with one out in the sixth inning with Dillon Shelton at the plate with a 1-2 count. Reliever Alex Dye was then called for a balk, scoring the tying run, and Freedom went on to gain a 5-3 edge.

The radio station said if the protest were to be upheld, the game would resume at the point Shelton was at the plate, and that would come when Watauga visits Freedom on March 28.

The report did not clarify the basis of Freeman’s protest.
