HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Shepler scores 10 goals as Lake Norman Charter girls roll in lacrosse

Sophomore Bryn Shepler scored 10 goals on Monday, leading Lake Norman Charter High’s 21-1 victory over Mooresville in girls’ lacrosse.

Emma Rhines added three goals and an assist in the Knights’ road victory that opened the season.

Sophomore Mary Sorvillo provided three goals for Lake Norman Charter, Jill Villanti had two goals and Abbie Rollins had three saves in goal for the Knights.

Lake Norman Charter’s next match is Monday at Pine Lake Prep (5 p.m.).

Fred T. Foard 3, Maiden 0

Anna Schmidt scored twice and Alexis Woglemuth had three saves, sparking the Tigers’ home victory over the Blue Devils.

Lilly Spangler had a goal for Foard (2-0) and Brianna See, Abigail Matthews and Hannah Cummings provided an assist each for the Tigers.

Foard battles West Lincoln on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Foard, and Maiden is at home Wednesday (6 p.m.) against St. Stephens.

BASEBALL

Bunker Hill 3, Bandys 1

Casey Knighton struck out eight over four innings and held host Bandys hitless as the Bears won their season-opening game.

Relief pitcher Chase Carden worked three innings and allowed three hits and he walked one and struck out six for Bunker Hill.

Josh Fulbright went 3-for-4, Seth Pennington drove in a runs, Seth Moore scored twice and A.J. Carpenter had two sacrifice flies for the Bears, who had eight hits.

Bandys finished with three hits and Ashton Reynolds drove in the Trojans’ only run.

Jake Reavis started for Bandys, going three innings. He gave up five hits and two runs (both earned), and Spencer Ledford struck out five over three innings in relief.

Bunker Hill is at home on Wednesday against St. Stephens while Bandys has a 7 p.m. home game that night against South Iredell.

Cherryville 4, East Lincoln 2

The host Ironmen got their runs on three hits to win a season-opening game.

Ty Cobb pitched four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and two hits and striking out five for the Mustangs.

Matthew McCowan led East Lincoln with three hits.

East Lincoln will be at home on Friday and play South Point.

Lake Norman Charter 11,

Community School of Davidson 1, 5 inn.

The Knights won their opener on the road behind had a 14-hit attack led by Peter Alperi.

Alperi pitched three innings, allowing five hits and one earned run, and he walked twice and had two hits.

Lake Norman Charter faces Queen’s Grant on the road on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Bandys 2, St. Stephens 1

At Bandys, the Trojans opened the season in a non-league game that had all of its scoring in the sixth inning.

Sophomores Jada Spake and Annie Andrews each drove in a run for the Trojans.

Riley Fox, sophomore, pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, one run, walking six and striking out three. Laura Drum threw 1 2/3 innings for Bandys, allowing no hits and on runs.

The game was moved up from Tuesday.

St. Stephens goes to Hibriten on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the Trojans play Thursday at South Iredell (6 p.m.)

East Lincoln 7, North Gaston 0

Payton Baker threw a complete game, striking out 14, and no-hit the visiting Wildcats to open the season.

Kyle Thress had two hits and drove in a run, freshman Betsy Eatmom had two hits and Katie Hogue, Haley Erwin and Tori Venters each had an RBI for the Mustangs.

East Lincoln had 11 hits.

Losing pitcher Sydney Hamilton gave up five hits, five runs (three earned), struck out three and walked two over 3 1/3 innings.

East Lincoln faces Hickory Ridge on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at East Lincoln.

Hickory 15, Challenger 6

Powered by a 12-run first inning, the Red Tornadoes won their season-opener at home.

Sophomore Maddie Jones went 4-for-5 with a triple and drove in three runs to ignite Hickory.

Carlee Logan, a freshman, went 2-for-4 and drove in five runs for the Red Tornadoes and freshman Kayla Ruff went 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.

Morvaja Summers added two RBIs for Hickory.

Logan threw four innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Hickory is at home Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., playing Statesville.

Alexander Central 4, North Lincoln 1

Kyliee Lapham drove in two runs and Faith Carrigan threw a complete game, allowing five hits, as the Cougars opened the season at home by beating the Knights.

Morgan McCaslin, batting fifth in North Lincoln’s lineup, went 2-for-3 and hit a home run.

Alexander Central scored a run in the first, another in the second and two in the third inning.

McKayla Watts took the loss for the Knights, going three innings. She gave up five hits, four runs (three earned), walked four and struck out three.

Carrigan struck out seven.

North Lincoln is at home Wednesday against Lake Norman (6 p.m.) and the Cougars will be at home the same night (6 p.m.) and play Maiden.

Freedom 12, East Burke 2

The Patriots won their opener in Icard behind Jade Lipsey and Mikayla Lingafelt.

Lipsey had two hits and drove in three runs and Lingafelt went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and threw a complete game (11 strikeouts, one hit, four walks, two runs).

Kayleigh Icard took the loss for the Cavs, pitching seven innings and striking out six. She allowed 15 hits and 12 runs (six earned).

Freedom plays Draughn at Freedom on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., and East Burke will be at home Wednesday at 5 p.m., facing West Lincoln.

GIRLS SOCCER

West Rowan 5, Bandys 1

Selma Mehmedovic and Mackenna Clifton each scored twice as the Falcons beat the Trojans in Mount Ulla in a season-opening match.

Brittany Vanhoose had two assists for West Rowan while Karen Anaya and Kelcie Love each had a save.

Bandys plays at Langstree Academy on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Hickory 7, Crest 1

The Red Tornadoes rode five goals by Izzi Wood past the host Chargers to open the season.

Zoey Tucker and Madeline Mosteller each added a goal for Hickory.

Addie Barrier had two assists and Wood, Mosteller, Nicole Koszichek and Brooke Rowland provided one each for the Red Tornadoes.

Taylor Rose made seven saves for Hickory, which plays at South Iredell on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Marvin Ridge 20, Hickory 2

Marvin Ridge scored 12 first-half goals en route to a season-opening victory over the Red Tornadoes in Hickory.

Sophomore Kate DeMore had six goals and two assists to spark Marvin Ridge with Elizabth Szempruch adding four assists.

Eryn Kasza had three goals and Kelli Morgan, Carolyn Szempruch and Shannon Ferko each added two goals for Marvin Ridge.

Freshman Meghan Barr had three saves for Marvin Ridge.

Hickory is at home on Tuesday 5 p.m. against South Iredell.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lake Norman Charter 22, St. Stephens 15

The Knights got eight goals and five assists from Micah Stechmiller as they won a season-opening match at home over the Indians.

Kace Burnette had 11 saves in three quarters.

Lake Norman Charter is at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m., playing Patton.
