HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: Cougars rally, nip Davie County for 2-0 start

Alexander Central High wiped out a one-run deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday to down visiting Davie County 4-2 in Taylorsville in baseball.

The Cougars (2-0) won a game that had only nine hits – five by Alexander Central – and got two from Josh Lafone, who was hitting sixth in the lineup. Lafone, Daniel Dessecker and Donovan Smith drove in runs for the Cougars.

Bryson Hammer, pitching in relief of starter Zach Hammer, picked up a win for Alexander Central. He gave up two hits over 3 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two after Zach Hammer went 3 1/3 innings (two hits, two runs, two walks, two strikeouts, two wild pitches).

Landon Bandy, Cody Hendrix, Carson Whisenhunt and Hite Merrifield each had one hit for Davie County.

Whisenhunt started for the War Eagles, going four innings. He gave up one hit, one run (unearned) with five walks and five strikeouts. Davie County reliefer Grayson Keaton took the loss (two IP, four hits, three runs, no walks, one strikeout).

Davie County led 1-0 through three innings and 2-0 after scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Alexander Central got a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The War Eagles made two errors and the Cougars, who left six on base, did not have any errors.

Alexander Central, which opened the season on Wednesday with a 5-1 home win over South Iredell, goes for a 3-0 start on Tuesday when it opens Northwestern 3A-4A play at home (6 p.m.) against Hickory.

South Caldwell 7, Draughn 0

With Issac Bush allowing just one hit over 5 2/3 innings and Kenin Anderson driving in three runs, the Spartans (2-0) won handily in a home game.

South Caldwell scored twice in the fourth inning, four times in the fifth inning and extended its lead to seven runs with a run in the sixth inning.

Austin Raynor and Owen Foxx each hit home runs for the Spartans, who got two hits from Jackson Brown and two from Foxx.

Hayden Lewis pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for South Caldwell after replacing Bush, who walked two and struck out eight while throwing 93 pitches. He got six swinging strikeouts.

Landon Biddix took the loss for the Wildcats, who had three hits (one each by Cole Triplett, Nathan Treadway and Colton Singleton).

South Caldwell has a makeup non-league game Monday at 7 p.m. at Maiden, while Draughn is idle until Wednesday’s 4 p.m. home game against Burns.

South Caldwell entered the season with the best winning percentage over the previous 10 seasons in the Greater Hickory area baseball at .822 (194-42).

Bunker Hill 4, Maiden 2

A four-run fifth inning lifted the Bears past the visiting Blue Devils, who were opening their season, and picked up career win No. 437 for head coach Marty Curtis (34th season).

Bunker Hill’s rally started with a single by Keaton Little, who later advanced with two outs and scored when Thanxton Isenhour beat out a ball hit into the infield.

A bloop single by Carrington Chapman also scored a run, a throwing error produced another run and Eli Moser walked, stole second and scored on a single by Garrett Poovey.

Jack Yoder came on in relief for the Bears (1-1) and threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Bunker Hill and Maiden, playing last season in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A, split their games with the Bears winning 2-0 at Maiden and the Blue Devils winning 12-4 at Bunker Hill.

The Bears went 18-9 last season, losing in the second round of the state 2A playoffs to Franklin, and they entered this season with the second-best winning percentage over the previous 10 seasons in Greater Hickory area baseball (193-82, .701, trailing only South Caldwell).

Maiden went 13-10 after falling in the first round of the state 2A playoffs to Surry Central.

Maiden is at home Monday at 7 p.m. to play South Caldwell in a makeup game and the Bears will start their Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Patton.

Patriots-Pioneers moved up

The opening Northwestern 3A-4A game of the season for Freedom and Watauga, originally scheduled Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Boone, will now be played at the same time on Monday.
