A new eight-team 3A high school conference that begins play in August will be named the Western Foothills Athletic Conference.

Conference officials announced the name selection earlier this month.

The league, formed by statewide realignment, will consist of East Lincoln, Fred T. Foard, Hickory, North Iredell, North Lincoln, St. Stephens, Statesville and West Iredell.

East Lincoln and North Lincoln and Fred T. Foard and West Iredell are moving up from 2A. The first two are currently in the South Fork 2A and the latter two are currently in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.

Lavell Hall, an East Lincoln graduate and former head boys’ basketball coach at Lincolnton and Hickory, will be the league’s chief administrator. He is currently in the same role with the Northwestern 3A-4A.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) will allow 10 varsity football games in the fall, meaning Western Foothills Athletic 3A teams can each schedule three non-league games.
