Joplin tabbed as Defensive Player of Year, Palozzi wins Coach of the Year

Newton-Conover High’s West 2A championship boys’ soccer team leads the All-South Fork 2A selections with five selections, including the league’s top player and coach.
Jon Joplin of the Red Devils was voted the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year by league coaches and Angelo Palozzi was named the Coach of the Year.
Chase Gilley of East Lincoln was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year.
The Red Devils, state champions in 2017, reached the state 2A final again but fell 2-1 to Clinton on Saturday at N.C. State.
Newton-Conover has five All-South Fork 2A players – Joplin, Declan Shea, Ben Harris, Dilan Esperilla and Manny Marquinez.
The Red Devils finished 12-1-1 and just ahead of East Lincoln in the South Fork regular season.
