TUESDAY’S HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Dejarnette-led Cougars go to 2-0

Kelsa Dejarnette led Alexander Central High to a 3-1 girls’ volleyball victory on Tuesday at home against Statesville.

The Cougars won 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17 to improve to 2-0 heading into a match on Thursday at West Iredell.

Alexander Central servers had 12 aces against the Greyhounds.

Chesney Millsaps added 10 kills, five blocks and three digs, Libero Emma Farmer had 14 digs and setter Kacey Payne had 14 digs and 24 assists for the Cougars.

Additionally, Ashlee Falls contributed five kills, two blocks and six digs, Sage Harrington had five kills and five blocks and Lanie Goforth provided four kills for Alexander Central.

Alexander Central’s junior varsity beat Statesville 25-18, 19-25, 15-7 behind Mady Thomas’ four kills and one block plus four kills, four aces and a block from Gracie Harrington.

Kinsey Elder posted 10 assists for the Cougars, with Allie Daughtrey (seven) and Savanna Bowen (five) leading in digs.

St. Stephens 3, Mount Tabor 0: The Indians won on the road – 25-23, 25-11, 25-9 – to open the season.

Leaders listed by the school in a game report online were: Madi Bolch (eight aces), Avery Jackson (19 digs), Sam Wilson (22 assists), Rebecca Kirkland (six kills) and Rachel Merrill (six blocks).

The Indians travel to Mooresville to play the Blue Devils at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, they are at home at 6 p.m. to battle Bunker Hill.

Draughn 3, Freedom 1: The Wildcats won at home — 12-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-16 — and plays at South Caldwell on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

Freedom will be at home on Thursday night for a 6 p.m. match against Patton.

Bunker Hill 3, Newton-Conover 0: The Bears opened their season with a non-league win on the road over the Red Devils, 25-16, 25-13, 25-13.

Bunker Hill’s next match is Tuesday at home against Bandys.

East Burke 3, West Lincoln 0: At East Burke, the Cavs won their season-opener over the Rebels in three straight — 25-10, 25-17, 25-18.

East Burke goes to South Caldwell for a 6 p.m. match on Thursday while West Lincoln travels that night, playing a 6 p.m. match at Cherryville.

Alexander Central 7, Davie County 4: Nathan Garcia scored three goals, Lisandro Lopez had two goals and three assists and Oscar Lopez added two goals as the Cougars opened the season with a home victory over the War Eagles.

Oscar Lopez, Braden Walker and Domenic Blackbull each had an assist for Alexander Central, which led 3-2 at the half.

Alexander Central’s junior varsity defeated Davie County 8-0.

The Cougars next play at the Wilkes County Cup on Thursday.

St. Stephens 9, West Wilkes 0: The Indians won a match in the Wilkes County Cup, blanking the Black Hawks.

St. Stephens meets West Iredell in Hickory on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. and plays Bunker Hill in the Wilkes County Cup on Saturday.

Maiden 1, Fred T. Foard 1: At Foard, the Blue Devils and Tigers played to a tie.

Maiden is at home Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to face East Burke, while Foard’s next match is on the road at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Hendersonville.

Statesville 2, West Iredell 2: The visiting Greyhounds and the Warriors played to a tie.

West Iredell goes to St. Stephens on Thursday for a 6;30 p.m. match.

Forestview 4, Lincolnton 2: The visiting Jaguars beat the Wolves in a season-opener.

Lincolnton’s next match, at home at 5 p.m., is against Cherryville on Tuesday.

Freedom 5, East Burke 1: The Patriots won at the Catawba River Soccer Complex as the Burke County rivals both opened their seasons.

East Burke has a 6 p.m. match at Maiden on Wednesday, and Freedom will face Patton on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the CRSC.
